8th Grade Drawing- Self-Portrait

All of the middle school's in our district do an 8th grade portrait drawing. We all agree that it's important for the kids to understand how to draw portraits when they get to high school. Many of the schools do a Barbara Kruger inspired portrait with text. The images are often very compelling. This year, I wanted to incorporate text with the portrait but wanted to do something different. My school just finished Rachel's Challenge and I wanted to do something that would reinforce the messages from that presentation.
Here is what my kids have done so far...

They will all be adding text to their bodies that relate the Rachel's message of kindness, compassion and caring to each other.

More pics to come soon!!

    1. They drew these completely by hand. Used the grid method. We now use charcoal for this project and they are even better. Check out their work on instagram @artwithmslloyd. It is not an art school. Our district has a great art program in elementary and it really helps build a strong foundation for middle school.

  3. Do you have art classes for a whole semester or just 9 weeks? We only have 9 weeks and we have a hard time finishing our on time, so we only do from the shoulders up.
