Art club- ceiling tiles

When I started this project with art club, I had no idea it would take off the way it did. The kids are painting ceiling tiles for the classrooms. I wanted to get one for each classroom over the next few years but the teachers love them so much, we pretty much have to do one for each teacher within the next few weeks. Teachers were stopping me in the hallway and emailing me to ask if they could get one. I am glad something as simple as a painted ceiling tile can have such a positive effect on the atmosphere of the school and can make people so happy.

    I'm getting ready to do this with 5th graders...42 tiles one per table...how did you store them while they were in the process of painting them?

      When they finished for the day (art club was at the very end of the day) they left them on a table or propped around the room. When I came in the next day, I moved them to a corner of the room (stacked vertically) until they were ready to paint the next day.

    Cool. You are the only other person I have seen do this. I Started doing my rooms large tiles and have hat more positive comments from every walk of persons; students, staff, Admin, custodians and parents, Excellent. Art-on!

    I wanted to try this in my classroom. I've seen others use chalk, but I like the idea of paint. What type of paint did you use? Did you put any type of protective coating on it when it was finished?

      We just used acrylic paint. No protective coating. Many have been up for a few years now and they still look great.

    I am an elementary art teacher and I am planning in doing this with my art classes. I thought I had seen a project like this using chalk or oil pastels and then spraying them with heavy duty hair spray. What would you recommend?

      We always used acrylic paint. I don't have experience with anything else.
